“Always look for the helpers.”

Fred Rogers, creator and host of the educational children’s television series Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, shared this advice in 1999 and, over twenty years later, it still resonates. In particular, these words perfectly express the willingness of MarketSource employees to assist people in times of need and uncertainty.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Program Managers Scott Morrison and Lauren Robinson discovered a critical need through their team leader Aaron Williams. Aaron’s wife, Jean Marie, is a nurse at a local hospital. Like many healthcare workers caring for those who fell ill early in the pandemic, she and her colleagues were experiencing a shortage of protective equipment—including masks—while attending to their patients. When Scott and Lauren heard this, they stepped up to help.

Scott, who uses protective masks while repairing cars, provided Jean Marie with twenty of his own masks for her to distribute within the hospital. When discussing this action, Scott insists he “did not do anything special,” but added that if everyone contributed in those small ways, it could make a big difference.

Lauren didn’t have masks of her own to donate, but she learned from a family member that relief groups were sewing these masks and donating them to hospitals. Curious, she watched an instructive YouTube tutorial and decided to give it a try, whereupon she became a mask-maker herself. For Lauren, “it felt important to help the people on the front line fighting this virus.”

Congratulations to Scott Morrison and Lauren Robinson for earning 2020 MarketSource Hero Awards. Thanks to their commitment to Serving Others—a MarketSource core value—they transformed word into deed and skill into action to support their local healthcare community.
