Shamshawan Goes to Great Lengths to Connect with Customers of All Backgrounds

One of the most well-known brands in the world—located in one of the most well-known cities—is bound to attract some fascinating and influential people. Enter Shamshawan Scott, sales supervisor at a global candy company’s flagship store in Times Square.

Shamshawan joined MarketSource last June. He was quickly promoted to his current position due to his shining sales capabilities and model work ethic. He exemplifies the “whenever, wherever, whatever” mentality, which is reflected in his perfect attendance record at work.

“My favorite part of this job is the relationships I build with customers and colleagues every day,” he explains. “Since I was young, I’ve been interested in the various types of people in the world and their perspectives on life. My goal is to always find a way to connect with our customers, regardless of who they are or their background.”

One way Shamshawan connects with customers is through the art of language. He began learning Mandarin eight months ago, inspired by his grandfather, who spoke it fluently and passed away last year. “I wanted to take after him,” he explains. “I started teaching myself through flashcards, reading books, and throwing myself into real-world situations.”

Our client’s store happened to be an ideal place to practice and deliver great customer service in Mandarin, as it attracts customers from all over the globe. “Whenever I hear customers speaking Mandarin, I try to have a conversation with them in Mandarin, as well,” he says. “Eighty percent of the time it goes smoothly, but if I mess up or start struggling, my new friends are happy to help me through it. I find they appreciate my effort to speak with them in their native language.”

The best he’s ever received? “Always move forward with a calm mind and heart—and most importantly—with love, no matter what.”

Shamshawan is also an accomplished commercial photographer and prefers to shoot film over digital because he enjoys the element of surprise after the negatives are developed.

He has taken photos of actors and musicians for print and online magazines, such as Rolling Stone and The New Yorker. For Netflix, Shamshawan was hired to shoot the production of Stranger Things 4. His photography career has allowed him to travel the world, and he once toured with a rock and pop band with 50+ shows in all 50 U.S. states.

Shamshawan’s multiple creative talents include modeling for ads and playing in a band. He plays both the piano and synthesizers.

For someone who has had so many interesting and fulfilling life and career experiences, Shamshawan is sure to have advice worth sharing. The best he’s ever received? “Always move forward with a calm mind and heart—and most importantly—with love, no matter what.” Now that’s some sweet advice.
